Usk Conservation and Environmental Group Diary of events 2008-9

For all walks, please wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions on the day, and bring lunch unless otherwise stated.  All age groups are welcome at our events.

March 2008
Monday evening 3rd March

Fair Trade coffee event
Coffee evening at British Legion Club Usk 7.30pm.  Usk Fairtrade Group in conjunction with UCEG are holding a coffee tasting evening.  Speakers include Jo Keen from the Bryn y Cwm Fair Trade Group, Colette Mooney Sustainable Communities Officer from MCC.  There will be numerous Fair Trade coffees to taste and enjoy.

Sunday 16th
Industrial Heritage Walk
.
Meet Henderson Hall Talybont on Usk (SO 112228) 10.30am.  (parking fee).  Using tramroads and towpaths to take in stunning views.  A moderate walk of approx 5 miles, led by Dave and Shirley. 

Saturday 29th to Saturday April 5th
A week’s holiday in Northumberland
Staying in Bamburgh Village, in self catering accommodation approx cost £200 (only very small number of places left).  Visits to Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle, possible trip to Farne Islands and walks.  To enquire please contact Graham 01873 852108.

Sunday 13th

Walk in the Trostre and Gwehelog area near Usk
Meet at Gwehelog Parish Hall (near Hall Inn pub on old Usk to Raglan road) 10.30am.  Route will include Hill Farm, Still House, Pyllwydd.  We may call in to Hall Inn for refreshments at end of walk!

Sunday 27th
Snakeshead Fritillary Day Trip
A trip to North Meadow near Cricklade, Wiltshire to see snake’s head fritillary (fritillaria meleagris) meadows.  We will car share to Cricklade, leaving Twyn Square at 8.30am.
 

May
Sunday May 4th

Tintern Area Walk
Meet Tintern Abbey car park 10.30am.  This will be a ‘shuttle’ walk car share from Tintern to start point.  Naturalist Colin Titcombe will be our guide, and the walk will include Tintern, Ninewells, Whitelye and the Angiddy Valley.

Sunday May 25th
Ridge Walk above Grwynne Fawr
Meet at Grwynne Fawr car park (SO 252285) 10.30am.  Moderate moorland walk approx 5 miles.  Shirley and Dave will be our guides.
 

June
Monday June 23rd evening.

Gadr Farm, Llangovan
A walk around a Tir Gofal site, including visits to ponds and woodland (Herb Paris).  Meet Usk Square 7pm to car share.

Friday 27th to Sunday 29th
Stressbuster weekend to Greenham Common
Adrian Hickman will be our guide on Saturday 28th.  Greenham Common is now a conservation area and abounds with wildlife.  Accommodation Travelodge Chievley.  Transport arrangements to be decided.  Early booking essential for accommodation.
 

July
Sunday July 6th

Walk in Trostre area
Meet Trostre Church 10.30am for a walk that will include Trostre Court, Hall Farm, Bettws Newydd Church.

 

Sunday July 13th

Trip to Flatholm
Flatholm is a SSSI and Local Nature Reserve.  A 3 hour guided walk will be provided – café and souvenir shop on the island (would suggest bringing packed lunch/snack).  £14.75 per person, children 4-17 £7.25, Family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) £38.  Please note that visits are weather dependent and may be cancelled at short notice.  Depart Cardiff Bay 11.45am, return Cardiff Bay 17.15pm.  We may call in at a suitable hostelry for evening meal on the way home.  Transport to be decided, mini bus or car share.  Booking essential.
 

August
Sunday August 3rd

Llanellen to Goose and Cuckoo
Meet Llanellen village hall car park at 10.30am.  The walk will include canal towpath, lanes, fields and woodland.  Lunch at Goose and Cuckoo if preferred.

Sunday August 24th
Black Mountain Walk
Meet Queens Head pub Cwmyoy (SO 311221) 10.30am.  Approx 6 miles, moderate walk, climbing to the ridge for spectacular views.  Shirley and Dave will be our guides for this walk.

September
Monday September 8th

Talk on Wolves
Liz Overstall is a documentary maker and has recently spent time monitoring climate change in the Antarctic.  Liz is also an authority on wolves.  Meeting 7.30pm The British Legion Club, Usk (tbc).  Entrance £4.

Sunday September 14th
Trefil to Talybont
A linear walk – minibus to start and collection from end £4 per person.  Meet Maryport Street north car park Usk at 9.30am. Route includes moorland, woodland tracks, lanes and spectacular views of Talybont Reservoir.  Booking essential.
 

October
Sunday 5th October
Fungi Foray
At Park Woods, Usk.  Meet Castle Lane, Monmouth Road, Usk 11am.  Colin Titcombe will be our guide for this walk.  Please bring wet wipes or similar as in all probability we will be handling fungi specimens!

Monday 13th October
Talk – “Beyond the Arctic Circle”
Talk by naturalist Colin Titcombe on how man’s influence has impacted on wilderness areas in Norway, Sweden and Finland.  Meet British Legion Club 7.30pm.

Sunday 26th October
Mitchel Troy to Ninewells

A shuttle walk, meeting initially at Mitchel Troy car park at 10.30am to car share to start of walk – Ninewells.  Naturalist Colin Titcombe will be our guide for this walk.
 

November
Monday 10th November

Talk – speaker to be announced
British Legion Club 7.30pm.

Sunday 16th November
Usk Llanbadoc Walk

Meet at Usk Island car park (Pontypool Road) 10.30am.  The route will include Usk Island, Coed Duon, Cefn Ila and Llanbadoc.

Sunday 30th November
Wentwood Forest

Meet at Foresters Oaks Picnic Site (overlooking the reservoir) at 10.30am for a walk along forest tracks.
 

December
December Walks: there will be no UCEG walks in December.  Bill & Marilyn of the Usk Walking Group may have walks organised for this month.  Contact Bill and Marilyn 01495 750176.

Monday 8th December
Christmas Party

This will include a quiz, raffle and buffet.  7.30pm British Legion Club, Usk.
 

January 2009
Sunday January 11th

Llanfoist – Llanellen area
Meet at Llanfoist crossing car park at 10.30am.  The walk will include The Incline, tram roads, Punch Bowl, Coed-y-Pryor, Canal Towpath.

Sunday January 25th
Trostre Common

Meet at Parish Hall, Gwehelog at 10.30am.  The route will include Trostre Common, Pwllcaes, Caemackie, The Brough, Lower House, Wainfield Lane.  We may stop for refreshments at Hall Inn at end of walk.
 

February
Sunday 8th February

Snowdrop Walk
Redbrook, Penallt and Argoed area.  Meet at the car park ion Redbrook 10.30am for this 6 mile walk.  Linda and Keith will be our guides for this walk, and there will be the opportunity to visit a couple of hostelries on the route!

Sunday 15th February
Trip to Snowdrop Valley, Wheddon Cross, North Devon

Car share or minibus.  Snowdrop Valley is renowned throughout the country for its show of snowdrops.  Although on private property, it is open for approximately 1 month during the snowdrop season.
 

March
Monday 9th March
AGM meeting 7.30pm British Legion Club.

Sunday 22nd
Walk to Clytha Castle, Coed-y-Bwnydd, Bettws Newydd. 

Meet car park at Clytha (approx 1 mile past Bettws Newydd on left hand side) 10.30am.
