Usk Conservation and Environmental Group Diary of events 2010-11

For all walks, please wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions on the day, and bring lunch unless otherwise stated.  All age groups are welcome at our events.  Further talks will be arranged during the autumn to spring period, dependant on British Legion club opening nights.  Please check noticeboards, shop windows, library and local press for details.

Usk Philosophy and Debating group meet on the last Wednesday of each month 7.30pm at the British Legion Club, Usk.

We will have a stand at the Usk in Bloom weekend of 26th and 27th June 2010.  Please come and visit us!

March
Wednesday 10th March
AGM at British Legion Club Usk 7.30pm.

Sunday 21st March
Usk to Golden Hill following the flood route, Coedcynyr and Grass Ski Centre.
Meet Maryport Street, North car park, Usk 10.30am.
 

April
Sunday 11th April
Figure of Eight walk in the Usk area.  Meet Castle Lane, Monmouth road 10.30am

Sunday 25th April
Bluebell walk, Wye Valley.  Meet Redbrook car park 10.30am.  Dave Jones will be leading this walk.
 

May
Wednesday 5th May
An evening walk to enjoy the bluebells around Coed y Bwnydd, Bettws Newydd.  Refreshments in the Black Bear afterwards.  Meet at Coed y Bwnydd 7pm.  Please car share as car parking at the start point is very limited.

Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th May
A week away (subject to confirmation) on the West Coast of Ireland to enjoy the special landscape of the Burren.  (details to follow).
 

June
Sunday 6th June
A walk along the Llangattock escarpment.  Meet on the roadside opposite the Horse Shoe Inn, Llangattock (SO 212 177).  Shirley and Dave will lead this walk.

Monday 21st June
Dragons and Otter walk!  Meet at Llanfoist Crossing car park 7pm.  Refreshments at Bridge Inn Govilon if required.

Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June
Usk Gardens Open Weekend.  Members will be on hand to answer any questions or queries about the group and its activities.
 

July
Sunday 4th July
A walk in the Ewyas Harold area.  Walk through fields and country lanes around Ewyas Harold at the southern end of the Golden Valley.  An opportunity to visit St Michaels and All Angles Church, St Peter’s Church, the motte and bailey earthwork and sample the organic ice-cream at Rowlestone Court.  Meet at 10.30am at Ewyas Harold Village Hall.  The easy to moderate walk is approx 5 miles and will be led by Dave Jones. 

Sunday 18th July
Wye Boat Trip.  Meet at the Old Court Hotel, Symonds Yat West at 11am for lunch, followed by the boat trip £15.50 per head.  Booking absolutely essential as there are only 20 places available.  Contact Graham on 01873 852108.

Sunday 25th July
A visit to Black Rock, Portskewett.  A foreshore walk looking at species which inhabit this environment, and visit to Lave Fishery Heritage site.  Meet Black Rock at 1.30pm, bring wellies and a light snack.
 

August
Sunday 8th August
A walk in the Cwmyoy area.  Meet at 10.30am at the Queens Head Inn Cwmyoy (parking charge) SO 311 221.  Shirley and Dave will lead this walk.

Wednesday 11th August
An evening walk at Usk Nature Trail.  Meet at Usk Island car park (Pontypool Road) 7pm.  Flora and fauna identification, medicinal uses and folklore of plant species.

Sunday 22nd August
A walk at Sedbury cliff area (near Beachley) to look for fossils.  Ammonites, ichthyosaurus, crinoids may be found along the foreshore.  Meet Loop Road, Beachley 12 noon.  Bring snack and wellies.
 

September
Sunday 5th September
Goose and Cuckoo walk.  Meet at car park, Llanellen Village Hall 10.30am.  Lunch at Goose and Cuckoo, or bring your own.

Wednesday 8th September
First talk of the autumn season.  Speaker to be arranged.  British Legion Club, Usk 7.30pm.

Sunday 10th to 12th September
Weekend trip to Hartland Quay, North Devon.  Arrive Friday for a coastal walk on Saturday, return on Sunday.  £80 B&B per person for 2 nights.  Please contact Graham to book 01873 852108.

Sunday 26th September
Symonds Yat – a walk by the river, cross the Biblins suspension bridge, up the other side and back across on the chain ferry (small charge).  Park at the Royal Lodge car park.  Head for Symonds Yat Rock, but take right fork down to the river at at Symonds Yat East.  The Royal Lodge car park is the last one, right at the end of the road £3 to park all day, ferry costs £1 per person. 
 

October
Wednesday 6th October
A Talk at the British Legion Club, Usk 7.30pm.  Naturalist Colin Titcombe will be our speaker.

Sunday 10th October
Fungi Foray.  Meet at Castle Lane, Monmouth Road 11am.  Bring wet wipes or similar.

Sunday 24th October
Trip to Westonbirt arboretum for autumn colour.  Meet at Westonbirt at 11am for a guided rout of the arboretum.  Bring a packed lunch or eat at the cafe/restaurant.  Entrance fee £5/£6.  Booking absolutely essential, contact Graham 01873 852108.

Sunday 31st (or possibly Saturday 30th) October
Halloween walk and party.  Meet at the bus stop at Ladyhill 6.30pm.  Walk through the tunnel, then a Halloween party at the British Legion for under 14s.  Be Afraid, be very afraid!!…..
 

November
Sunday 14th November
A walk in the Neddern Brook area, with naturalist Colin Titcombe, looking at wintering birds.  Meet at Caldicot Castle 10.30am.

Wednesday 17th November
A talk, (speaker to be confirmed) at the British Legion Club 7.30pm.

Sunday 28th November
A circular walk in the Usk area.  Meet at Maryport North Street car park 10.30am.  The walk will include the Usk Nature trail, Usk inlier, Cefn Ila and Llanbadoc.

 

December
There will be no walks during December.

Monday 6th or Wednesday 8th December
Annual Christmas party with quiz, buffet (Polly’s catering) and raffle.  British Legion Club 7.30pm.  £5 entrance.

 

January 2011
Please note that talks will hopefully be arranged for Wednesdays, dependant on British Legion open nights.  Please check press, notice boards, shop windows, library etc for details.

Sunday January 9th 2011 
A walk, Llanfoist and the Punch Bowl.  Meet at Llanfoist crossing car park 10.30am.  A difficult walk, but we will be coming down the Incline this time, rather than going up it!

Sunday 23rd January
A walk in Wentwood Forest.  Meet Forester’s Oaks Picnic site 10.30am for a walk following forest tracks.

 

February
Sunday 13th February
Snowdrop walk in Skenfrith.  Meet Skenfrith Castle car park 10.30am.

Sunday 27th February
Whistle stop walk Blaenavon?  Meet at Lower Garn lakes car park, Blaenavon.  We may stop at the Whistle Inn for lunch, or bring your own.

March
Wednesday 9th March
AGM at British Legion Club Usk 7.30pm. 

Sunday 20th March
Mynydd y Garn Fawr, Blaenavon walk.  Meet at Keeper’s Pond, Blaenavon 10.30am.
