Usk Conservation and Environmental Group

Usk Conservation and Environmental Group was formed as a result of an urban ecology study of Maryport Street Usk.  Part of the study asked local residents if there was room for a new general conservation group in the town.  The result was a resounding "Yes!"   In 2010 we celebrated our 10th anniversary, a testament to the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers and supporters.

What do we do?

The group runs a wide variety of activities, all related to environmental issues both local and global.  Practical projects include the establishment of a new wildflower meadow, clearing the old railway to create a walking and cycling route, and planting a new 1 acre area of woodland.  The group also runs weekly walks all year round, and talks during the winter with visiting speakers on a wide range of subjects.  More recently UCEG has organised weekend breaks to other areas.  Please use the links on this page to find out more about our activities.

A lot of our practical work activity is focussed on the old railway line, where we have opened a walking route, and on Jane's Meadow which we  manage for the benefit of wildlife and local people.  We have received excellent support with funding and advice from Environment Wales and Keep Wales Tidy.  During 2010 we were shortlisted for two national awards - Biffawards and Tidy Towns.  We are pleased that our experience has been used to encourage more groups to start locally, and more people to take part in volunteering for the environment.  We are always open to ideas for new projects, please contact us if you have a burning idea to which we could contribute!
