Welcome to the web page of Monmouth & District Friends of the Earth Group

Page updated 3rd June 10

We are one of a large number of local Friends of the Earth Groups throughout the UK, whose members want to make a positive difference to where they live.  We started in summer 2005.  We are active in a number of campaigns locally, and were pleased to see the first of these (Monmouth Farmers' Market) come to fruition.

Transport Issues
Harness parade in Agincourt Square, MonmouthGreen Travel Day
We were heavily involved in organising Electric car on Monnow BridgeGreen Travel Days in both 2008 and 2009 in Monmouth, promoting more eco-friendly ways to get around.  2008 Green Travel Day was held on a Friday, so we were able to get commuters and schools involved.  In 2009 the day was held on a Saturday, and with more people around town, we provided more alternative forms of transport for the public to see and try out.  These included electric bikes, electric and low emission cars and a fantastic parade of harness horses, which really turned heads in Monnow Street. We have plans for a similar, even bigger event in 2010.

Walking and Cycling Group.  We are supporting Monmouth Partnership Forum in a project to improve routes and facilities for walkers and cyclists who want to get around town more easily. We were very pleased to hear the news that the Monmouth scheme will benefit from the successful Connect 2 Sustrans bid, and look forward to the construction of two bridges and connecting cycle and walking routes across the town.

Waste and Recycling
Plastic bags!  We share the concern of many people over the number of plastic bags that are consumed every day, and the pollution and environmental damage they cause.  Plastic bags are not necessary in most cases, but they are very convenient!  We have asked local supermarkets to change their practice of automatically offering customers plastic bags for their shopping.  Marks and Spencers has been very helpful, but we have been disappointed by the response from the other supermarkets in Monmouth.  We have worked with Transition Monmouth to provide 'Big Green Monmouth Shopper' fabric bags for shoppers in Monmouth.  These are now available at various outlets in town.

Concern about Household Waste Collection Systems  We are disappointed at the loss of the much valued, and award winning Black Box recycling scheme, which collected sorted and separated waste from the kerbside.  We do not think that the new 'co-mingled' scheme is as effective in collecting high quality recyclable materials, and are concerned that a higher proportion of the recyclable materials will not be able to be recycled once materials have been mixed together in one bag.

And concern about a proposal to send Monmouthshire residual waste for incineration.  Monmouthshire Council is working in partnership with four other authorities in south east Wales on Prosiect Gwyrdd to procure a facility for 'residual household waste'.  Although plans for a proposed energy from waste incinerator have been rejected by Cardiff Council, we await news of Prosiect Gwyrdd's solution to the problem of residual waste, and hope that future proposals will not be based around an incinerator.

Supporting local producers and the local economy
Fix the Food Chain Campaign.
We are taking part in Friends of the Earth's Fix the Food Chain Campaign during 2009 and 2010.  The campaign aims to raise awareness of the way in which livestock is reared and fed.  There is particular concern about the use of soya based livestock feed, grown primarily in South America on newly cleared rainforest.  We have been shocked to learn that meat and dairy production generates 18% of the world's climate changing gases.  We want to find ways to support our local farmers who rear livestock responsibly.  We held a stall at the Farmers' Market on 25th July and 22nd August, encouraging people to sign postcards aimed at introducing a Sustainable Livestock Bill.  We have been disappointed that our local MP David Davies does not support this campaign.

Starting a farmers' market in Monmouth.  The first Farmers' Market took place on July 22nd 2006, on the picturesque Monnow BridThe Farmers' market on the old Medieval Bridge 22nd July 2006ge.  We are very proud to be associated with it.  It was well supported by a range of local producers including vegetables, plants, bread, salads, wine, ready meals, local meat and fish and even hand made chocolates.   The stall holders were pleased with the number of customers.  We have a stall at some markets, providing information about environmental issues.  Thank you to the many local people who are continuing to support the market. Click here for forthcoming dates.  Special thanks to Stephen Shearman of Farmers' Markets in Wales for all his work in establishing the market and keeping it going.  We are concerned at the number of plastic carrier bags that are consumed, even by a small farmers' market. If you can bring your own bags, or re-use an old shopping bag or basket, please do so.  Every little helps!

We are an enthusiastic group of local people, and new members are always welcome at our meetings, which take place (usually) on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm at The Three Horseshoes pub, Drybridge Street, Monmouth.  Forthcoming meetings as follows:

Monday 7th June, Monday 12th July, Monday 9th August 2010 Three Horseshoes, Drybridge Street Monmouth 7.30pm

Farmers' Market dates 4th Saturday of each month on the old Monnow Bridge
