About Us

The Society was established in 1968 as a ‘preservation’ society, anxious to resist inappropriate change in and around the Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire parts of the valley.

The Society knows that our landscape cannot be preserved unchanged, but it believes that changes should reflect existing patterns, historic features and the natural beauty of
the Lower Wye Valley.

The society has opposed proposals for new large quarries and some large developments within the valley, and urged caution over proposals for a national cycleway, arguing that these should be implemented only with local support and provided there would be no environmental damage.

The society is active in other ways too. It has helped to purchase land for public access to the river bank, and identified building styles that were in keeping with the landscape.

Our aims

We aim to safeguard the exceptional qualities of the Lower Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of its natural and physical environment.

We believe that the beautiful countryside of the Lower Wye Valley with its river, gorge, woods, meadows and green lanes is unique and that it must always be protected against insensitive and intrusive development for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.

We seek to achieve these objectives by using our members’ local knowledge to identify emerging problems and to develop solutions.

As a member of the Joint Advisory Committee of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we contribute to the development of policies and we liaise with local authorities about planning issues.

We aim to be vigilant and constructive.
