Who are we?

Monmouthshire Local Access Forum is a statutory forum advising on how to make the countryside more accessible and enjoyable for recreation. The Forum is made up of representatives from a wide range of organisations including landowners, walkers, the County Council, Countryside Council for Wales and environmental groups.

Our aims

We provide guidance and contribute to the management of the countryside in Monmouthshire as well as improving opportunities for people to enjoy it.

What do we do?

The remit of the Forum is:

  • To advise on the improvement of public recreation and the enjoyment of the area as described in the Countryside and Rights of Way (CROW) Act 2000.
  • To advise on the delivery of the Rights of Way Improvement Plan for Monmouthshire.
  • Promote the appropriate use of opportunities to enjoy the countryside, and to foster a better understanding of the varying needs of different types of users.
  • Advise on the appropriate management and maintenance of access, balancing the provision of access against the needs of biodiversity, wildlife management and of landowners and managers.
  • Advise on developing new ways for everyone to enjoy the rights of way and access network, in particular for those with disabilities.

The aim of the forum is to provide an independent view, rather than to reflect the views of a particular organisation. It is made up of countryside access users, land owners and other member of the public with an interest.

The forum generally meets  four times a year. Members of the public may attend meetings as observers and comment, but not vote.
