Take part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch.  It’s easy to take part, you just have to record the birds you see in your garden or park for one hour sometime during the weekend of 24th and 25th January, recording the highest number of different easy to recognise species such as blackbirds seen at any one time.  It’s fun to take part in an event that many thousands of other people participate in too, and then to wait and see the results and find out which bird was spotted most often in your part of the UK.  Register on the Big Garden Birdwatch website  but in the meantime start feeding your garden birds regularly to get the best results.
