Latest News: The Welsh Assembly
Government's National Transport Plan presented to the Senedd on 15th July
does not include the construction of the new M4 Relief road, much to our
relief. Instead it outlines a series of measures that will aim to
resolve the traffic issues on the current M4 and surrounding roads and
infrastructure. Closing date for responses to the consultation on the
National Transport Plan is October 12th. This is a link to the
Welsh Assembly Government's web page about the National Transport Plan
On July 3rd 2009 CALM launched a visionary
Prospectus for options that would provide value for money solutions to
the transport and traffic issues around Newport, and a viable alternative to
the new Levels M4. The Prospectus contains a combination of favoured
options including integrated local transport planning for Newport, Cardiff
and surrounding areas, making better use of existing road capacity, and
traffic/demand management. The Prospectus is intended to stimulate
discussion and inform the debate prior to the publication of the Welsh
Assembly's National Transport Plan later this month.

The planned
24km toll motorway will
WAG claims that the new motorway is needed to relieve congestion on the existing M4, particularly around Newport. The route of the new road would go from the existing Magor junction, taking a route south of Newport to re-join the existing M4 at Castleton (see map below). The new road would destroy a series of nationally important wildlife sites, not just through its construction but would also create a physical barrier between habitats, would impede water movement through damage to ancient drainage systems and cause pollution by run-off from the new road. It would also open up new areas for further development. Local people share the Gwent Levels with otters, water voles, wading birds, and a wide range of rare insects and plants. Our supporters include Friends of the Earth Cymru, Gwent Wildlife Trust, RSPB Cymru, World Wildlife Fund Cymru, Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales and nine local community councils, concerned about the impact of the road on local people's quality of life.
