Bunting making at Cantref School |
BUNTING
Members of the Abergavenny Fairtrade Forum took a message to the Mayor,
Norma Watkins, in the form of a length of bunting made up of an amazing
300 individual flags on white Fairtrade organic cotton which have been
created by a wide section of the community. Pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg y
Fenni and Cantref schools and the Sunshine’s Nursery at Llanfoist all
contributed. Local Toddler Groups and the Munch Brunchers also made lots
of flags. There were bunting sessions in the Library, at a Pancake Lunch
in the Methodist Hall and at the Farmers Market which added to the
bunting. Many individuals too numerous to mention also assisted and
several helped with stitching the bunting together.
At the bunting making sessions there have been discussions raising
awareness about the importance of Fairtrade cotton production to the
livelihoods of farmers in West Africa and India who are amongst some of
the poorest communities in the world and how Fairtrade / organic cotton
has a positive impact for both the producer and the consumer. The Forum
has been encouraging shoppers to look out for the increasing numbers of
outlets for purchasing good quality and stylish clothing made from
Fairtrade and organic cotton.
The bunting, which is over a quarter of a mile, will be sent to
Fairtrade Foundation in London as our contribution to setting a new
World Record for the longest piece of bunting. The bunting will be
officially measured on May 8th World Fairtrade Day. |

ANNUAL SOCIAL
No Fairtrade Fortnight can happen without the Annual Social so this year
we combined feasting and celebrating with an inspiring talk about cotton
production in India by Geoff and Carol Jackson.

We welcome new supporters to our Forum – The Elephant Pump Café, the
Civic Society, Vintage Vision, Penydre Farm B+ B. Soon we will be
launching our new look Fairtrade Town leaflet which has been designed by
