SawmillingWentwood Timber Centre is a project which aims to increase awareness of the potential of Monmouthshire hardwoods for a range of commercial, domestic and recreational use and provide continuity of supply from sustainable sources.  The project will seek to prove that Monmouthshire Timber can be developed as a sustainable resource.

Woodlands
Broadleaved woodlands cover approximately 14% of the county including 5 National Nat
Beech woodlandure Reserves and 49 SSSI’s, part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Woodlands are a valued resource within the county for social, economic and environmental benefit.  However much of the timber is small diameter, being a product of bringing neglected woodlands back into sustainable management. Monmouthshire County Council, working closely with Coed Cymru has been working very hard to develop ways of protecting this resource and adding value to the product.

Timber Centre

Air drying timberThe Wentwood Timber Centre has been established to provide a stockpile of local timber for use by businesses and the wider public.  Each batch of timber will have a chain of custody, which identifies its source, and certify that it is managed in an environmentally sustainable way.  A range of different species of timber is available including: -

  • Beech – White or reddish brown, it is widely used in turning because of close grain.  Anti-bacterial properties make beech ideal for chopping boards and work surfaces.

  • Ash – Generally white or light brown, it is straight grained and works easily.  Suitable for handles, furniture, joinery and flooring.Woodmizer

  • Sycamore – White or cream and lustrous, hard and strong suitable for a wide range of uses.

  • Oak – A hard and strong timber suitable for a variety of uses including external and internal joinery, flooring and furniture.

  • Sweet Chestnut – Pale brown in colour it is durable in ground contact and useful for a range of applications including veneers.

  • Alder – Neglected as a timber tree for a long time it has good working properties and is reddish brown in appearance.
