Local Agenda 21 is about finding ways to ensure a better environment and
quality of life not only for people today, but also for our children and
grandchildren who will inherit the earth which we will pass on.
This is called “sustainable
development”, and means thinking about how environmental, social and
economic issues can be tackled together to share what resources the world
has fairly both for people today and in the future.
There are many different ways in which you can think globally and act locally, to make your life more sustainable. Listed below are some of the projects that the Sustainable Development Team are working on in partnership with community groups, voluntary bodies and other agencies. If you would like general information on any of these projects you can contact Colette for further details. There are however links to other web sites if you are interested in reading more.

Schools
competition
This is an annual competition held in partnership with the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW). Children are invited to enter artwork, posters or written work to illustrate 'My Favourite Place in the Countryside'. Winners and runners up will be awarded with book tokens at a prize-giving in July. In March the Chairman of MCC and representatives from CPRW helped children plant native daffodils in all participating schools. |

Fairtrade
Many farmers and workers in developing countries do not get their fair share of the benefits of trade and often work in poor conditions with low wages and little job security. Fairtrade guarantees farmers in developing countries a fair price for their products that covers the price of production.
In Monmouthshire we have produced a local directory that tells you where you can buy Fairtrade. We also work with local groups promoting Fairtrade and are happy to attend meetings and give presentations to local groups.
Monmouth became a Fairtrade Town in March 2005 and now groups in Abergavenny, Chepstow and Usk are trying to follow suit. if you are interested in helping out with any of these campaigns then please get in touch.
If you would like to find out more about the Fairtrade Foundation, click here to enter their site. |

Eco-schools
Across
Europe schools are signing up for Eco-school status.
Schools form a committee of children and staff who look into ways
of making the school more ‘environmentally
friendly’. Schools
are then assessed and awarded a bronze or silver award, and if the school
prove to be committed to environmental change and have ongoing
and positive projects they may gain the green flag.
First Green Flag - HURRAH! Many schools in Monmouthshire have been carrying out environmental and social projects for a number of years - and this year Shirenewton was the first, of many we hope, to be awarded the prestigious Green Flag Eco-school. If your school is interested in getting involved then please get in touch. |

Strategy
Following the Earth Summit in Rio (1992), each Local Authority in Britain was required to write a Local Agenda 21 Strategy that would set out a vision for a better future based on local needs and what local people think is important. If you would like a copy of the LA21 strategy please contact us. |
